NBA Staff Members Meet Congressional Staffers To Discuss Gambling

NBA team member consulted with congressional staffers Wednesday to talk about the league ´ s relationship with sportsbooks and other matters related to the betting scandals that resulted in federal indictments of Miami guard Terry Rozier, Portland coach Chauncey Billups and others last month, two individuals with knowledge of the talks stated.


The people, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of privacy due to the fact that information were not right away openly, said that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was not at the meeting, nor were any sitting members of Congress. Among individuals explained the conference in Washington as "a fact-finding session."


It's unclear if the meeting will please requests from legislators in both the House and Senate for information from Silver about the league's gaming policies and, specifically, why Rozier was cleared to play after sportsbooks flagged uncommon betting patterns surrounding his performance for a video game on March 23, 2023, when he was with the Charlotte Hornets.


Sen. Ted Cruz, the Republican chairman of the Commerce Committee, and Sen. Maria Cantwell, the leading Democrat on that panel, have said with regard to that video game including Rozier that they want information "about how the NBA examined and handled these allegations in addition to what steps the Association is taking to maintain the general public ´ s trust."


"This Committee needs to comprehend the specifics of the NBA ´ s examination and why Rozier was cleared to continue playing basketball," Cruz and Cantwell composed.


Federal authorities say Rozier conspired with associates to help them win bets based on his statistical efficiency because March 2023 game. The charges are similar to what former Toronto gamer Jontay Porter faced before he was banned from the league by Silver in 2024.


A House committee likewise asked for information from the NBA on a variety of matters, including "spaces, if any, in existing policies that permit prohibited betting schemes to happen." Silver has said lot of times he would choose federal guideline on sports betting over the current model that has individual states deciding how it should be managed.
